Getting up in front of an audience to speak can be exhilarating or nerve-wracking.

Some relish the thought of having an audience savouring their every word, while others would prefer to be absolutely anywhere else.

A group of Chelmer locals formed the Chelmer Speakers five years ago because they felt there was a need in the local community for a group to help locals develop public speaking skills.

Michael Skerrett was the 2016-17 President of the group and one of the original members.

In 2014, the group became an official Toastmasters International club.

Fast-forward to today and they have 27 regular members who attend the fortnightly meetings.

At the meetings, the group focus on impromptu and prepared speaking on various topics.

The meetings expand their vocabulary and their minds, and we spoke to some of the members about why they joined the club and what they love about it.
