Cannon Hill | Why Everyone Should Check Out This Club
Author Shannon Edwards // Place Bulimba
Tucked away in the leafy streets of Cannon Hill, this community club has been running for 50 years!
The Cannon Hill Community Sports Club, formally known as the Cannon Hill Bowls Club, provides space for locals to catch up over a friendly game of lawn bowls, relax at the bar and bistro, and meet neighbours at their unique community functions.
On a mission to expose the club to the broader community, the club members and committee with the help of their sponsor, Place Lead Agent Meagan Muir, are spreading the word and inviting everyone from the community to come on down – no matter your age or experience with bowls.
Meagan sat down with one of the clubs very special members, Louis Angus to ask what she loves so much about the Cannon Hill Community Sports Club.

Louis, tell us how you became involved with the club?
When I first came to Brisbane I didn’t know anyone but my family.
I quickly realised that no one would come to knock on my door and introduce themselves just because I was new and that I had to go out and meet people.
I moved locally to the club here in Cannon Hill and would drive past it every day and see the sign that read “visitors welcome”.
I had never had any experience with bowls before so they were very patient with me when I was learning.
I started off by playing lawn bowls three or four times a week and was getting rather good.
There’s a lot of walking involved and it uses a lot of concentration so it’s a great form of exercise.

What do you love so much about the club?
I love that the club has such a welcoming, friendly atmosphere where I’ve been able to make many new friendships.
There’s a great ambience here at the club, especially when we do parties and functions for the community.
What’s so great about the club is it welcomes everyone no matter their age, skills or ability.
What people need to understand is that lawn bowls is not just for old people – the sport can be a great social game for people of all ages.
We love with children come down to play and we can teach them how the game works. They get quite a kick out of it when the ball actually does what they want it to do!
Every second Sunday of every month, Meagan sponsors a game at the club for absolutely anyone from the community! Meagan has also generously donated some prize money that players have the chance of winning.
To sign up to one of these events, give the club a CALL.
