Does your jewellery need some TLC?

Our beautiful and treasured pieces can often be neglected, even though easy cleaning techniques can make them shine like new.

Dan Cox is an artist who specialises in jewellery making and has become an expert when it comes to keeping jewellery squeaky clean.

We caught up with Dan as he let us in on three techniques that are simple and easy to help maintain the shine of your jewels.

Can you tell us about your history as an artist?

I studied and graduated at the Queensland College of art over 10 years ago now.

After I finished my degree, I started creating and making jewellery for the Museum of Brisbane.

Then, I decided I wanted to get into teaching how to make jewellery.

My first gig was teaching at Flying Arts and Brisbane Institute of Arts and, in between that, I taught at a lot of different places around Australia.

Anywhere they want me to teach... I go!

Now the focus is my own school, DAP Jewellery School at Coorparoo.

I opened the school about three years ago and run all the classes here.

We do all types of classes from three hour sessions through to eight week workshops, teaching all different types of jewellery making.

At the moment, my focus is more on recycling. I’ve been using a lot of recycled spoons, so I can still use my silver smithing techniques.

My favourite thing about being an artist is the idea that you can be as creative and crazy as you want.
