Schools Out | Ways to Entertain the Rug Rats in the 4005
Author // Shannon Edwards, Place New Farm
The time has come - school holidays have returned.
As much as we love the extra time with the kids, it can get a little tedious (and exhausting) finding ways to entertain them.
So, we’ve compiled a list of fun, family-friendly activities to do around New Farm this holiday break - we promise, they’ll be enjoyable for mum and dad too.
Picnic in the Park
Newstead Park is the perfect location for an afternoon picnic with family and friends.
Perched on the hill of Newstead House, the park has scenic river views.
Pack a basket, shake out the picnic rug and lounge beneath the jacaranda trees.
A great spot for the kids to run-a-muck and burn some energy, while you relax with a nice book and take in the serenity.
Holy Moly - No ‘Ifs’ just Putts!
We’ve really set the bar high with this family funday.
Holy Moly is Fortitude Valley’s latest indoor, mini golf course.
Turning putt putt into a multi-sensory labyrinth, the unique course will keep you on your toes and promises fun for the whole family.
Challenge your kids to a little family competition with children welcome any time before 5pm.
Kids Gotta Eat
There’s no secret that New Farm is home to some of the tastiest cafes of Brisbane.
But how do you choose where to take the kids?
One of our favourites is Lost Boys in Fortitude Valley.
Inspired by Peter Pan’s Neverland, Lost Boys fairytail interior is bound to entertain the little ones.
Not only is it a fun café, but the vegetarian menu is awesome and totally organic!
It tastes so good, the kids will never suspect it's healthy.
New Farm Park
You can’t have a day out in New Farm without paying visit to the picturesque New Farm Park.
With a playground like none other, there’s no wonder this is one of the most popular parks in Brisbane.
A shaded, fort like tree-house with a bridge that winds through the aging fig trees, the playground is a climber’s paradise.
But don’t worry, if you’ve got a ‘climber’, the fort is grounded by a good cover of mulch to protect the inevitable tumbles.
Shopping for the Whole Family
Mix up the weekend’s grocery shop and check out the Jan Powers Farmers Markets.
Running every Saturday, the markets bring the freshest Queensland produce to the 4005.
The markets are bustling with all your pantry needs as well as fresh flowers and plants.
There’s plenty of delicious treats and knick-knacks for the kids to enjoy.
Our tip: stock up on all your fresh produce needs, then grab a freshly squeezed juice and a gourmet sandwich and enjoy a lunch on the lawn with the family.
New Farm Cinemas
Add a little bit of luxury to your lazy movie days.
In a beautiful historical building on Brunswick Street, New Farm Cinemas is a blend of old and new.
Slouch back in one of the large, comfy seats or snuggle up in a bean bag and enjoy premier comfort in one of the five revamped rooms.
Offering an array of classic and blockbuster films, New Farm Cinemas always has something on offer that the whole family will enjoy.
Merthyr Bowls Club
What better way to enjoy a gorgeous Queensland Autumn day than a good old game of barefoot bowls?
Perched on the banks of the Brisbane, Merthyr Bowls Club has a relaxed vibe with cool river breezes.
With ice-cold brews, including juice and lemonade, and a pub menu bound to please those big and small, Merthyr Bowls makes for a great visit any day of the week.
Come down, kick off your shoes and join in the fun.
