Bulimba’s Black Developments | Life Behind the Tools

Born into a family of builders, you could say that Black Development's CEO and founder, Tim Black, was destined for a life of tool kits and hard hats.
Running to the construction site after school to work alongside his grandfather, Tim has lived and breathed the building industry since he was a boy.
Tim shares with us the history of Black Developments, based in Bulimba, and what he loves about the industry.
Tell us about your background?
I was pretty much born into the building industry and it’s something I’ve always been interested in.
My grandfather was a renowned builder in the local area, followed by my uncles.
When I was in school I would spend most of my weekends and holidays working alongside my family on their job sites.
How did Black Developments begin?
Black Developments started in 2015.
I’ve always wanted to run my own construction business and Black Developments was something I’ve been planning for years.
Having worked for numerous high-end builders and developers in the past, it was my personal goal to gain thorough knowledge from more experienced workers.
At the time of launching Black Developments, I knew that I had enough experience and the time was right.
The company is based in Bulimba with most of our projects being within a 7km radius of the city.
Our service area stretches from Bulimba and Hawthorne to New Farm, Teneriffe and Paddington.
What do you love about the job?
I believe the biggest achievement is seeing a project progress from a vacant piece of dirt into a luxury craft home.
Handing over a completed project brings me the most satisfaction.
It’s really nice to see a family move into a home that they’ve watched grown over months or even years.
I also enjoy the problem solving involved with the job – it keeps me on my feet.
For example, being able to solve an issue on the spot is what I believe sets a good builder apart from the rest.
Black Developments is based in Bulimba. What do you love about working in the area?
What’s not to love?
The Bulimba / Hawthorne area is a spot where families can see themselves settling for the next 20+ years.
The area has fantastic amenities on offer from great schools, various sporting clubs, some of the best restaurants in Brisbane, parks and of course, the river right at our doorstep.
Also, the character of the homes in the area is very unique.
From a building perspective, as a company that specialises in Queenslander-style homes with a modern twist… I think that’s what draws me to Bulimba.
